Biopark adventure

Before starting my new job I've been trying to enjoy my free days and do stuff that I haven't been able to do before. One thing was to try yoga and whether it could be something I could really start doing as a hobby. I found an amazing studio right in the center of Fuengirola who offer classes every day. They happened to have a lesson during the day on Thursday and Friday while Saimi was at school, so I dipped in for a try-out and fell in love immediately. I think that yoga could really be my thing, I felt so good after the lessons! I'm definitely going back and they said that they also have children on their lessons, so if Saimi wants to join me, we can go there together!


Today we had an amazing day at the local zoo, Biopark. We went there with friends who live next to us. We had such a wonderful day!! I hope that you get a glimpse of the atmosphere of the zoo from these photos and videos. The videos are just short clips, I didn't have time to edit them together. They are as much for us to remember the day as for you to see what we experienced, so I just attach them here without any fancy explanations! :)

The green color of these snakes is just beautiful... Still, I don't know if I'd like one as a pet... They also had bats. Not my thing at all. Unfortunately I didn't get good photos of all the animals in the zoo. If you want to see them, you just have to come here and see for yourself!

After the zoo we went to an Italian restaurant and had a delicious meal. The best pizza we've eaten here!

Back to school!

Last weekend was the last weekend of our holiday. Dinner with friends and a few rides at this funfair were our way to end the holiday and prepare for school. Saimi started her second grade on Monday! It was weird to spend a few hours on my own. We've been such a tight package with Saimi for so long, that I didn't really know what to do with all that time. So, I just sat on a bench in a park under a tree and just watched people. Luckily I got company, another mom sat down with me and we spent the two hours chatting about everything while waiting our second graders to finish their first day. It was also weird to stand outside the school gates. Usually I'm one of the "insiders", knowing about all the practical things inside the school, but now I have to get used to being "only" a parent, the same as everyone else.

I have no idea what this fish is and whether it is edible, but it looks that it would be easy to catch them!

The weather has been quite the same for these two weeks that we've been here, but we have experienced some small variations. One day it was so windy that the curtains were flying high and dropping Saimi's toys to the floor from her nightstand. She asked if we had any clothespins, and this is what she did with them. Resourceful!

Yesterday it was very cloudy and maybe a few degrees cooler than usually. After I got Saimi to school, I walked to the center. Next week I'll start working, and I really hope that there will be more of these cloudy days, so that it's a bit more comfortable to walk to work! Today I started to look for a moped. That's probably the most convenient mode of transport here, and would really ease my commuting. Luckily, it's only about 2km, so I'll just walk if necessary. Public buses are quite cheap, but from where we live, they run maybe once in an hour, and because it's the busiest time of year, the schedules seem to be quite flexible, due to the number of tourists using the buses. Nevertheless, I'm excited to start working next week! (I'll tell you more about the job afterwards.) I'm glad that we could arrange so that I only work for 6h a day, now that I haven't yet got any support system for Saimi's mornings. Parents have to take the children (under age 12) to school and pick them up, for security reasons. Still, I'm sure everything will work out, it's only been two weeks... One step at a time! :)

At the beach

We went to the beach the other evening and were surprised by the waves! Earlier that day it had been raining and it was quite a windy day. The temperature dropped to maybe 25c. It has been over 30 most days, so it was refreshing to have one "cool" day. :)

People had to rescue their towels from the sand when the water suddenly rose much higher than we expected. It was so much fun to watch children play in the waves!

Today we are going to see our friends and go to dinner together. Later we'll go to this small funfair next to the beach. I though that it would be nice to celebrate the end of the holiday by doing something fun. The school will start on Monday. Let's hope we can start waking up earlier for school from now on... Lately we have got up at nine or ten and breakfast at eleven. I'm actually really looking forward to starting a normal daily rhythm here! :)

Kavereita ja yöelämää

Sunnuntaista lähtien on saatu tutustua uusiin kavereihin! Sain täällä Fuengirolassa asuvien suomalaisten lapsiperheiden yhteystietoja erään facebook-ryhmän kautta, ja tässä ihan meitä lähellä asuu montakin perhettä, joihin ollaan jo tutustuttu. Leikit ja juttelut onnistuu aika kivasti, kun on omanikäistä seuraa ja alkaa kotona kahdestaan käydä aika tylsäksi.

Näiltä uusilta tuttavilta on saatu myös kivoja vinkkejä ajanviettoon! Maanantai-iltana käytiin rantaleffassa, joka alkoi niinkin aikaisin, kuin 22.30, koska oli lasten elokuva. Lemmikkien salainen elämä, espanjankielellä ja englanninkielinen tekstitys. Hyvin pysyttiin kuitenkin mukana, koska oltiin nähty elokuva jo aikaisemmin moneen kertaan. Ehkä itse elokuvaa tärkeämpi juttu olikin koko se kokemus, kun katsottiin leffaa hiekkarannalla pyyhkeiden päällä istuen, varmaankin tuhannen ihmisen keskellä täydenkuun valossa. Sitten vielä käveltiin kotiin ja mietittiin, että onkohan koskaan valvottu näin myöhään. Nukkumaan Saimi pääsi vasta puoli yhden maissa.

Eilenkin löytyi tosi kivaa seuraa, ja hupsista vaan, aikahan kului niin, että uimaan päästiin vasta ehkä puoli kymmeneltä illalla! Onhan se tavallaan kiva, kun ei ole enää pelkoa siitä, että iho palaa paahtavassa auringonpaisteessa. Monet paikalliset, tai ehkäpä täällä lomailevat muut espanjalaiset, viettävät iltamyöhään aikaa rannalla. Kitarankin joku oli tuonut, eikä niitä paria biisiä pääse pakoon edes hiekkarannalla. Arvaatte varmaan mitkä kaksi biisiä soi koko ajan? (lue tekstin alta...) Jäätelö on täällä melko halpaa, ainakin verrattuna suomen hintoihin, ja toimii ihan hyvänä iltapalana, ainakin nyt kun on vielä loma.

Löysin tuosta läheltä kioskin, jossa oli käytettyjen kirjojen kaappi. Eurolla saa luettavaa, ja vielä englanninkielistä, jota mieluummin luenkin. Löysin kirjan, joka kertoo yksinhuoltajaäidistä ja tämän pienestä pojasta. He jättävät tutut ympyrät, ostavat matkailuauton ja lähtevät seikkailulle vuodeksi. Jotenkin kolahti. Siinä äiti miettii, että pystyy olemaan lapselleen enemmän läsnä, kun ovat kahdestaan. Näinhän se on. Läsnäoloa, mutta myös välillä raastavaa sellaista. Vaikka mulla onkin ehkä maailman helpoin lapsi, välillä tuntuu siltä, että aika kivaa, kun koulu alkaa, niin saadaan molemmat hengähdystaukoa toisistamme. Sitten mullakin on enemmän aikaa käydä hoitamassa asioita ihan itsekseni. Esim. käydä työhaastattelussa. Monet on kyselleet työtilanteesta. Vielä ei ole mitään, mutta ei tarvitsekaan olla! Alunperinkin ajattelin, että elokuun ajan olen Saimin kanssa ja saadaan koulu hyvin alkuun ihan rauhassa, niin että mulla olis mahdollisimman vähän mitään muita aikatauluja. Pikkuhiljaa olen kuitenkin heitellyt verkkoja vesille, eiköhän sieltä jotain työmahdollisuuksia tule, kun on tullakseen!

Kaikenlaista pientä jännää

Vasta vajaa viikko ollaan nautittu Espanjan lämmöstä, mutta kaikenlaista pientä on jo ehditty puuhailla ja ihmetellä.

Saimia mietitytti tosiaan se, että löytyykö täältä mitään sellaista ruokaa, mistä hänkin pitää. Saimihan on siitä helppo, että lemppariruuat hänellä on maksalaatikko, pinaattilätyt, hernekeitto, tonnikalapasta ja lohi. Noh, suurin osa näistä on aika suomalaista, eikä ihan heti ole täällä vastaan tullut maksalaatikkoa... Hernekeittoa löydettiin tuosta lähikaupasta, siis ihan sitä suomalaista, mutta hintaa oli vähän enemmän kuin Suomessa. Muitakin Suomi-tuotteita täältä löytyy, ja meidän kaappiin haettiin jo pari tuttua tuotetta.

Lähikaupassa on kyllä pieni lihatiski, mutta ei mitään kalaa. Pakattuja lihoja en ole löytänyt näistä parista pienestä lähikaupasta, siis jos nakkeja ei lasketa. Isoon markettiin on matkaa 2-3km. Sinne kävelee aika kivasti alamäkeen, mutta kotimatka kauppakassien kanssa saattaisi sitten olla vähän erilainen. Pitää varmaan tilata taksi joskus, ja lähteä isommasti kauppaan sen avulla. Skootterin hankintaa olen ajatellut alusta asti, mutta hieman vielä epäilyttää tämä hurja liikenne. Jos kesäkuun tutkimusreissullani ymmärsin oikein, täällä saa ajaa kevytmoottoripyörää, jos on ollut ajokortti kolme vuotta. Erillistä moottoripyöräkorttia ei siis tarvitse olla. Pienemmällä menopelillä täällä ei edes pärjäisi, koska liikenteessä täytyy päästä kulkemaan nopeasti autojen seassa, ja tehoja täytyy riittää myös ylämäkiin. Skootteri olisi se kätevin kulkuneuvo täällä, joten ehkäpä vielä sellainen jostain löytyy, vaikkapa myöhemmin syksyllä, kun liikennettäkin on taas hieman vähemmän.

Jauhoja ja sokereita oon myös tutkiskellut kaupoissa, koska tykätään leipoa. Jauhoja löytyy jännästi eri tarkoituksiin. Ostin kahta erilaista, yhdessä on leivinjauhe mukana, toisessa taas ei. Kyllä leivinjauhetta löytyy erikseenkin, joten itseäni hieman ihmetyttää, miksi pitää pakata erikseen valmista sekoitusta. Fariinisokeria en ole vielä löytänyt, mutta ehkä se johtuu noiden pienien lähikauppojen suppeista valikoimista. Sähkövatkain pitäisi varmaan myös etsiä jostain, ja kakku- tai muffinivuoka.

Keksejä onneksi pystyi tekemään myös ilman sähkövatkainta. Ihan hyvin sopi se valmis jauho-leivinjauhe-sekoite ainakin tuohon peanut butter cookie-reseptiin, ja ruskea sokeri korvasi tällä kertaa fariinisokerin.






Eilen käveltiin keskustaan ja vietettiin kaupunkipäivää. Rantaakin käytiin katselemassa. Etsittiin Saimille paremmat kengät koulun aloitukseen. Hakusessa oli sandaalit, joissa olisi paksu pohja ja pehmeät remmit. Kuudennesta kaupasta löytyi! 8€ maksoivat, toivottavasti kestävät ainakin jonkin aikaa. Yhden rihkamakaupan myyjä muistutteli minua ystävällisesti siitä, että kannattaa pitää omia laukkuja tarkasti silmällä. Kaksi samaan aikaan katselukierroksella ollutta naista olivat kuulemma yrittäneet availla pientä käsilaukkupussukkaani, joka oli minulla muka tiiviisti vartaloa vasten. Eivät kuitenkaan olleet saaneet sen metallista nipsua avattua. Itse en tätä tapahtumaa huomannut ollenkaan! Myyjä oli kuulemma katsellut heitä tarkalla silmällä ja kehottanut poistumaan.

Meidän pihan altaan jakavat kaikki sitä ympäröivät kolmen talon asukkaat, joten se on aika suosittu paikka ja kovassa käytössä. Nyt on kuumin kuukausi ja espanjalaisten lomakuukausi. Eniten tuolla altaalla kuulee espanjaa, ja yhden keskustelun minäkin jo kävin espanjaksi yhden perheen äidin ja isoäidin kanssa! Saimin on tietenkin vaikea päästä lasten juttuihin mukaan, kun kielimuuri on suuri. Yksi ranskalainen perhekin on, ja suomalaisia tavattiin myös. Kulttuurieroja näkee hauskasti, vaikka mitään yleistyksiä en haluakaan lähteä tekemään. Eilen seurattiin ison espanjalaisen perheen lomajuttuja, ensin riehakkaina altaassa ja illemmalla pallopelejä tuossa nurmialueella. En tiedä olisiko suomalaisesta perheestä lähtenyt yhtä paljon ääntä.

Yhdestä facebook-ryhmästä luin, että eilen illalla olisi ollut joku juhla keskustassa, elävää musiikkia siellä täällä ja kaupat auki myöhäiselle asti. Meidän päivärytmi vaan on vielä sellainen, että väsy tulee aikaisin, koska ei olla vietetty siestaa nukkumalla, vaan vain sisällä lepäilemällä. Ehkä myöhemmin osataan nauttia myös ilta- ja yöajasta lähtemällä katselemaan tapahtumia tai viettämällä sosiaalista elämää, kun löydetään kavereita. Vastapäisen talon katollakin tapahtui jotain, ehkä sielläkin juhlittiin.



Parvekkeella on iltaisin kiva käydä nuuskimassa erilaista tuoksua, minkä jokainen, joka on ollut lämpimissä maissa, tunnistaa varmasti. Se on jonkinlainen sekoitus hiekkaa ja lämpöä, tai jotain muuta mitä en osaa erottaa.

The first little adventures

Hello from Spain! :)

Yesterday was a really looooong day! I probably slept 4 hours altogether but woke up every once in a while to check the alarm, so that we wouldn't be late from the flight. Well, we weren't, but our flight was. Luckily, for only one hour. Our luggage was a bit overweight, so instead of paying the 11€/kg extra fee, I just moved the overweight to my hand luggage, which was underweight. Ta-daa, problem solved!
The first 30 minutes during the flight were a nightmare. There was a 2-year-old boy two seats behind us, and I guess he was either really tired, or his ears were hurting from the take off, (or some other cause for a two-year-old to do this), but he was wailing, loudly, the whole time. Me and Saimi were almost desperate, that if this was going to continue for the entire flight, we wouldn't be able to handle it. Well, he did fall asleep eventually, so there. 4h 30min later he woke up to start again for the landing. But we made it to Malaga! After taking the train to Fuengirola and a taxi to our apartment, we got the keys and here we are, at our new home!

 First I started to arrange our stuff so that the apartment would feel like ours. It took me about two hours, but in the end, all the things we brought with us found their own place. (And Saimi counted that I brought 7 pairs of shoes for myself, and 4 pairs for her.)
It's quite weird to get to know our new home. Everything works a bit differently, for example the windows and doors, locks, stove, shower, the washing machine and the dishwasher. Saimi loves the apartment, which is a relief to me. She was a bit nervous about everything, but now that she has seen that we can find eatable food and have a secure home, we will survive!

The kitchen is ok, but quite a few things need to be bought... There are, however, at least two dozen wine glasses.

 We had to make two trips to the near-by stores to buy some food and breakfast for the next day. Even though it was quite cloudy, it was really, really hot, and after a long day, we were exhausted. Because it was Saimi's birthday, we celebrated by having ice-cream and I promised that we would go and find a present for her the next day. We went to bed at 8pm and slept for 12 hours! This morning started with a fruity breakfast at our balcony.

I also got to check the efficiency of our vacuum cleaner. We broke a glass first thing in the morning. Hopefully that will be the only thing that breaks. Well, the vacuum cleaner could be the second, because it was rubbish, and nothing compared to my own, which I had to leave behind. So the first thing I miss from home is my Lux. (For those who don't know, I have a very special relationship to my vacuum cleaner. I sold it to myself in summer 2008 and nothing compares to it.)

Today we decided to go to Miramar by bus. It's a huge mall, and because we needed many specific things, a perfect destination. First we found a Disney Descendants doll for Saimi (I guess that's what's 'in' right now...) and then bikinis for both of us.

The most important thing that was missing from the kitchen, was a blender. But now, our smoothie-life can begin! We also got powder for the washing machine and dishwasher, plus a laundry basket. You can't escape the household chores even in Spain...

Now we are heading to the pool, but not before adding loads and loads of sunscreen, SPF 40. Laters, friends! :)
